Why Age 7 Is the Best Time to Visit an Orthodontist

Many parents believe that orthodontic treatment begins only during the teenage years when braces become necessary. However, an orthodontic evaluation at the age of 7 can play an important role in a child's dental development and help identify potential problems before they become more complex.
Creating awareness among parents about the importance of an orthodontic check-up at age 7 is one of the main objectives of my school awareness programs. At this age, children usually have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth, allowing orthodontists to assess how the teeth and jaws are developing and determine whether any intervention is needed.
Why Is Age 7 Important?
By the age of 7, many developing orthodontic problems can be detected early. Identifying these issues at the right time allows for better guidance of jaw growth and tooth eruption, often leading to simpler and more effective treatment.
Benefits of an Early Orthodontic Evaluation
A) Better Oral Hygiene
Early visits help children and parents become more aware of oral health and proper dental care, promoting good habits from a young age.
B) Prevention of Future Complications
Early diagnosis may reduce the severity of orthodontic problems and, in some cases, help avoid extensive treatment later.
C) Timely Use of Palatal Expanders
For children with a narrow upper jaw, a palatal expander can create additional space, reduce crowding, and improve jaw development when used during the growing years.
D) Reduced Need for Extractions
Creating adequate space early in development may decrease the likelihood of tooth extractions during future orthodontic treatment.
E) Early Correction of Developing Problems
Stage 1 orthodontic treatment, usually lasting about six months, can address concerns related to jaw growth, facial profile, speech, and tooth alignment. After this phase, children are monitored as their permanent teeth erupt, and if required, a shorter Stage 2 treatment is completed later.
The Value of Early Intervention
In my experience, early orthodontic intervention often prevents cases from becoming more complicated.
In some situations, simply removing certain baby teeth at the right time can help permanent teeth erupt into a better position, sometimes eliminating the need for orthodontic appliances altogether.
An Early Visit Doesn't Always Mean Braces
It is important for parents to understand that not every child who visits an orthodontist at age 7 will require treatment. Often, the visit is simply an opportunity to evaluate growth, monitor development, and plan for the future if needed.
A simple orthodontic check-up at age 7 can make a significant difference, helping your child achieve a healthier smile and reducing the need for more complex treatment later in life.
