The Cost of Skipping Orthodontic Care

Thought of writing this blog when I recently saw two of my patients who came to get their Orthodontic treatment started years back but avoided it because of the cost. This time they came to start the orthodontic treatment of their kids. When they asked me to do the consultation for them also, I was not surprised with the condition of their oral health. Their dental problems had progressed over the years.
This made me think about an important question: Does avoiding orthodontic treatment really save money?
Orthodontic treatment is often associated with straighter teeth, better aesthetics and a confident smile. But its benefits go much beyond appearance.
What can happen when orthodontic treatment is delayed?
Misaligned or crowded teeth can lead to:
- Increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease: Crooked teeth can be difficult to clean properly, allowing plaque to accumulate.
- Excessive wear on teeth: An improper bite can put abnormal pressure on certain teeth, potentially causing:
- Chipping or cracking
- Enamel wear
- Jaw discomfort and, in some cases,
- TMJ problems
- Difficulty chewing: Poor bite alignment can affect how efficiently you chew your food.
- Speech difficulties: Certain types of tooth and jaw misalignment can affect pronunciation.
- Higher future dental expenses: Problems that could have been addressed earlier may eventually require more complex and costly treatment.
- Impact on overall health - poor oral hygiene increases the likelihood of systemic health issues
Of course, not every orthodontic problem needs immediate treatment. The right timing depends on the individual, which is why an orthodontic evaluation is important.
Skipping orthodontic treatment may save money initially, but delaying necessary care can cost more in the long run.
More importantly, a healthy, confident smile can make a difference in some of life’s most memorable moments.
Orthodontic care is an investment—not just in your smile, but in your long-term oral health.
