Why Regular Dental Checkups are a Must?

I thought of writing a blog on this topic when one of my patient’s sister around the age of 27 years asked me a question “Why the dental checkups are needed and how often the visits should be scheduled?”

Routine checkups help us in saving our natural teeth. We all have one set of adult teeth. Saving our natural teeth is one of the best benefits of regular dental visits. Regular checkups prevent infection of the mouth cavity and also prevent a damage to the tooth structure which is irreversible.

Reasons for taking care of our natural teeth:

1- Natural teeth let you eat variety of healthy food

Without teeth our diet would be very limited. Most of the healthiest foods like vegetables, nuts, wholegrains, fruits etc. need to be chewed thoroughly. Every tooth structure is uniquely formed which helps us to chew and bite the food effectively. Even the loss of one tooth can make chewing difficult.

2- Natural teeth preserve the face structure

When all the natural teeth are present and they are in good shape, the face looks symmetrical and balanced. The act of chewing strengthens the jawbone so that the facial structure is preserved. When the teeth are missing, the stimulation of chewing is reduced leading to shrinkage in jaw bones. This gives the face an older and a sunken look.

3- Well aligned natural teeth helps the speech

Crooked teeth or loss of teeth not only affect our appearance or what we eat, It affects the speech as well. When the child’s teeth are crooked there is a higher chance of them developing a speech problem. Crooked teeth and missing teeth affect the tongue placement and therefore the speech gets impaired.

4- Natural teeth look beautiful

Natural teeth are simply beautiful. Nothing can compete with the look of the natural teeth that have been well maintained. Following the normal hygiene and staying regular with the dental checkups can keep them healthy and strong.

5- Teeth appearance affects confidence

Research of American dental association says that 30% of the kids don’t smile because they are self-conscious. This percentage is even higher for the adults which also affects their self-esteem.

Poor Oral hygiene causes many systemic health problems:

  1. Ongoing research suggests that gum disease is linked to diabetes and health of the heart.
  2. Poor dental health affects pregnancy because the harmful bacteria from mouth can travel through the blood stream into uterus. Studies say that there could be a link between gum disease and premature babies.
  3. Some studies show link between poor oral hygiene and Alzheimer’s disease. It could be that certain bacteria travel through the mouth to the brain through blood stream.

Act today to save your natural teeth so that they last as long as you live. Most people benefit from one or two dental checkups a year. Since every mouth is unique a single standard recommendation doesn’t work for everyone.

You can schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Seema Bansal for more informantion.

Thank you Dr.Seemaji, it’s very helpful information you have shared with us. “Prevention is better than cure” well said. As a commoner, we always ignore vital things and ultimately confront with unwarranted diseases for no reasons. Dr.Seemaji treats every patient as her family member and the kindness involved in her procedures is extremely laudable. Thank you once again, we love you. ❤️
