Preventing the deposition of dental plaque is of prime importance to avoid oral health problems.

1) Many oral health problems are related to dental plaque which is an invisible layers of food particles and bacteria over the tooth surface. It hardens to forms tartar or calculus.
2) Calculus may lead to a more serious form of gum disease like pyorrhoea.
3) Bacteria within the plaque produce organic compounds which are responsible for bad breath or halitosis.
4) Plaque interacts with the food we eat and cause tooth decay and cavities.
5) Untreated caries may spread the infection to underlying bones and cause pus collection, pain and swelling.
6) Prolong use of tobacco, pan masala and gutka can lead to oral cancer and other serious oral diseases.
7) The teeth are susceptible to picking up stains from habits like smoking, chewing pan masala and gutka. These can discolour the teeth.
8) The teeth can grow irregularly in abnormal position causing crowding and various other problems known as malocclusion.
9) Teeth may suffer from excessive wear and tear causing hypersensitivity and pain due to

a. Habit of aggressively brushing the teeth.
b. Using a hard toothbrush.
c. Regularly eating or drinking acidic foods and beverages.
d. Acid produced by the body (hyperacidity).
e. Prolong use of abrasive material on teeth like chemical and salt.
f. Unconscious and excessive grinding of teeth specially when under stress.

Remedies for reducing the bad breath:
i) Clean your tongue, 90% of your bad breath is caused by bacteria or dead cells on the back of the tongue.
ii) An anti-microbial fluoride mouth wash used along with brushing and flossing can help prevent bad breath.
iii) Schedule regular dental visit for professional cleaning and check-up.
iv) If you think you have a constant bad breath, keep a check on the food you eat and the medication you take since some systemic conditions like indigestion and worm infection can also cause bad breath.

Remedies for hypersensitive teeth:
a. Good oral hygiene can help prevent conditions such as receding gums which causes sensitivity.
b. Use of super soft tooth brush.
c. Use of alcohol free mouth wash as it will be less irritating to sensitive teeth.
d. Application of fluoride gel.
e. Use of Mouth guard to prevent the grinding from damaging your teeth.
