You are done with the active treatment in which your misaligned teeth have been straightened out, but one more step is left and that is finishing. Finishing is done by retainers. These retainers help in holding your teeth until they become more secure in their new position and allow them to adjust to one another.

There are three types of retainers: -

  1. Hawley Removable Retainer
  2. Essix Clear Plastic Retainer
  3. Fixed Bonded Retainer

The length of time the teeth must be retained off-course varies depending on: -

  1. Complexity of the case
  2. Age of the patient
  3. Level of the instructions followed by the patient
  4. Frequency of breakages of wires
  5. Loosening of the braces

Some of the things which you have to be careful with the retainers are: -

  1. Wear them seriously
  2. Keep them clean
  3. Keep them in safe places when not worn
  4. Don’t fiddle and play with your tongue when they are in your mouth to avoid making them loose.

During the period of retention, we will check at intervals of several months to ensure everything is in place and for minor adjustments if needed.

In the event of loss, breakage, or damage to the retainers you should contact your orthodontist as soon as possible to prevent an undesirable relapse.

Failure to do so will need to necessitate a further period of active orthodontic treatment. Your cooperation will ensure that the results have lasting benefits.

You can schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Seema Bansal for more informantion.

A good orthodontist is required to finish your treatment and give you the right retainers .and yes they are v imp part of the treatment as there is always a tendency to relapse.dr seema Bansal made these for me and explained me how to use them on.i find her a v valuable orthodontist who knows the latest techniques and is kind and patient enough with her patients.lucky to have her in mumbai

That’s very important advice. In fact I tell patients that retention phase is more important than the treatment because it’s totally patient dependent. Cooperation in maintaining/ wearing retainers enhances the treatment outcome while laxity or negligence leads to treatment relapse . Teeth are moved using braces and wires but the surrounding gingival Fiber’s begin remodelling only after the braces are removed. Most important the remodelling process requires 1year at least. Hence the importance of holding the corrected position of teeth with retainers during this period.
